Every phone phreak knows about the Captain Crunch whistle, which produced the 2600 Hertz audio tone that controlled long distance trunks in those days. What many do not seem to realise is that early phone phreaks would “pulse dial” entire phone numbers with nothing more than the whistle, or with nothing at all but themselves if they had “perfect pitch” and could consistently whistle the tone and keep a phone number straight in their mind. The program first prompts you for the phone number. Then it plays 1 and a half seconds of 2600 Hertz to seize the channel. Then it will pulse dial your number in 2600 Hz. This is called rotary or single frequency (SF) blue boxing. This text is not a tutorial on blue boxing, a very broad and complex topic. Where and how this program could ever “work” is not a topic to be adressed here. Much less would I wish to argue the point of the ethics of making free calls or otherwise hacking the phone system. Obviously that is all beside the point anyway, since this is just a proof of concept program for informational purposes only. Your mileage may vary.
